Homophobia at the Athens Opera: Rusalka / Homophobie chez l'Opéra d'Athènes

Last Friday the greek premiere of czech composer Antonín Dvořák's opera "Rusalka" was staged by the Athens Opera House in a co-production with the Opera de Nice. The french director Marion Wasserman decided to give a homosexual undertone to the play, depicting Rusalka (a siren of the streams and lakes in slavic mythology) as a representation of the repressed homosexual desires of the prince that she falls in love with - in direct parallel with the real story of king Ludwig II of Bavaria. In one scene the prince is seen kissing a male extra - who is really just his mirror image.

During rehearsals, elements in the AOH orchestra (which is funded by the greek government) reacted strongly to the homosexual scene and used their influence to try to suppress it. During the general rehearsal the scene was cut and the excuse cited was that a group of schoolchildren were invited to watch.

During the premiere on Friday, members of the orchestra distributed flyers to the audience signed by the orchestra's administration board in which they expressed their "frustration" that "an innocent fairy-tale" was corrupted by "extreme homosexual imagery". The premiere took place without problems with the male kiss featuring as planned, and was watched among others by former President of the Republic mr. Stefanopoulos. After the end of the performance however, when the french director appeared on stage members of the audience started hissing and booing so loudly that, when she tried to address the crowd, she was drowned out by the noise.

On Saturday night a group of lgbt activists stormed the Athens Opera House and demanded to read a text protesting the orchestra's homophobia and attempted censorship before the start of the performance. They were manhandled by the opera staff and, once inside the hall, a fight broke out between them and members of the orchestra with some members of the audience shouting at them to get out and let them enjoy the performance. After the end of the play the french director gave media interviews claiming there was an attempt at censhorship which is unacceptable in a european country.

Vendredi dernier, l'opéra d'Athènes a donné la première de "Rusalka" d' Antonin Dvořák mise en scène par Marion Wassermann. Il s'agit d'une coproduction entre l' opéra d'Athènes et l'opéra de Nice. La metteur en scène -inspirée par l'histoire vraie du roi Ludwig II de Baviére- avait choisi d'y introduire une tonalité homosexuelle: la Rusalka d'Athènes (une nymphe des rivières et des lacs dans la mythologie slave) est représentée comme l'incarnation des désirs homosexuels réprimés du prince, dont elle tombe amoureuse. Dans l'une des scènes on voit le prince embrasser un figurant masculin- qui est en fait son propre reflet dans un miroir.

Lors des répétitions, des musiciens de l'orchestre de l'opéra, qui est subventionné par le gouvernement grec, ont vigoureusement réagi à la scène homosexuelle et ont tenté de la faire supprimer. Lors de la générale, la scène fut supprimée sous le prétexte de la présence d'écoliers dans la salle.

Lors de la première vendredi passé, des musiciens de l'orchestre ont distribué des tracts au public, signés par le Conseil d'administration de l'orchestre, dans lesquels ils exprimaient leur frustration de voir un "conte de fées innocent" corrompu par une "imagerie homosexuelle extrême".

Il n'y eut pas d'incident pendant la représentation de la première, à laquelle assistait M. Stefanopoulos, l'ex Président de la République. Mais à la fin de la représentation, lorsque la metteur en scène vint saluer le public, des spectateurs se mirent à huer et à siffler de manière si véhémente que, lorsqu'elle essaya de s'adresser au public, sa voix fut couverte par les huées.

Samedi soir un groupe d'activistes gays et lesbiennes a envahi l'opéra et à demandé à pouvoir lire un texte dénoncant l'homophobie de l'orchestre et la tentative de censure avant la représentation. Ils furent appréhendés par le staff de l'opéra et conspués par une partie du public qui les enjoignait à sortir de la salle et de le laisser voir la représentation en paix. A la fin du spectacle, la metteur en scène a donné une interview aux medias dans laquelle elle dénonce la tentative de censure dans un pays européen.
